Device vs Facility Equipment (To Assign or Not to Assign)

This is a great workflow question! I would suggest that if the device is attached to the room (basically, it is not moving with the teacher), make it a facility device! Here are some threads to check out:

We currently have them as devices, but we assign the location and room to the device and do not assign it to a user, typically.

For the OP modules, if they have their own tag we might link them to the SMARTboard asset. But we have not done anything like that.

We use facility equipment for furniture, carts, etc.

I know ​@bclark and ​@Cozmo03 do something similar. Any chance you would be willing to share your insights with ​@MLocke 773d4ae eacs? 

We would assign those as facility equipment to the room. Typically we don’t assign much to users beyond their laptop under the thought if that person transferred to a different building what would stay behind? If it stays behind it’s usually facility equipment.

For each location, we have each room listed in the room dropdown menu. Overall, people feel the need to put some in the room dropdown even when it is a 1:1 device, so we also have  “1:1 Teacher Device” and “1:1 Student device” listed as choices. Using the general rule below, our Inventory Specialists select the proper room selection. 

For our district, this is the general rule for assigning device locations to assets:

• Devices that require a cord tethered to an electrical outlet, i.e. interactive board, desktop, etc., are assigned to the room and are not required to be assigned to the individual. The room is set to the actual room where the device is located. 
• Devices that can be used on-the-go, i.e. laptops, ipads, cellphones, keyfob, etc., are assigned to the individual. The room is set to 1:1 Teacher or 1:1 Student depending on the user.

I’m glad I stumbled upon this thread! My current district is a little inconsistent on Devices vs. Facilities. In my previous one, EVERYTHING was a Device, since that made filtering the assets easier. We didn’t use Facilities at all.
