Figured a new topic made more sense than burying this in my existing discussion.

We have Chromebooks with our students, and they keep their devices as they transition from elementary school to middle school & middle to high.

Am I correct in thinking the following setup will work?

  1. At some point over summer, our SIS will send the new location info to iiQ (Pretty sure this is on us to “flip the switch”, if you will.
  2. I write out a rule to run at least once after this data comes over to assign the device’s location to the student’s location & push the changes to Google Admin
  3. I also double-check my Google Device mapping to make sure the OUs are mapped correctly.

I thought the “Asset & Owner Location Mismatch” filter might be also be helpful, but nothing changed when I tested using it. Maybe I don’t understand how it’s supposed to work?

Hi @AMeyer Greendale Schools ! That set up looks good to me! A few questions:

  1. When you assign an asset to an owner, do you want the assets location to match the owner’s location automatically? (As you mentioned, we can then have a rule set up to push the changes to Google Admin).
  2. Asset & Owner location mismatch is basically saying show me all assets that are assigned to an owner whose locations don’t match. Are you saying you are not getting those results from the filter?

Thanks!

Hi @Melissa_iiQ

  1. I have this currently set up & working
  2. I’ll be honest and say I can’t quite remember exactly how I had my rule set up. I’ve been making so many changes that I’ve forgotten! I’ll give it another shot with my test account.

What I’m looking for is how to address assets that are currently checked out. If the owner’s location changes during a nightly sync with our SIS, that should be enough to get caught by the “Asset & Owner location” mismatch option, right?

@AMeyer Greendale Schools

There is a site option that I think will do the job 😁 And you wouldnt need the rule.

@Hannah Bailey  beat me to the punch- this is where I was headed next 😁

@Hannah Bailey @Melissa_iiQ my understanding of that site option is that it applies to any asset assigned to a user. We have things like computer docking stations, desktop PCs and monitors assigned to users right now, and those don’t move between buildings. If I can exclude those “static” items with a rule, then the site option might be helpful.

@AMeyer Greendale Schools you are correct with the site option. In your specific scenario, the rule would work best.

for the second part of your previous question above; yes, that filter should catch those changes. Are you seeing this is not the case?

@Melissa_iiQ I will test again today/tomorrow. I started working on this at the beginning of the week & our instance of iiQ was having performance issues. Those issues might explain why my rule didn’t work.

@AMeyer Greendale Schools sounds good. let me know if it’s working as intended, I can try and take a look.

Thanks!

@Melissa_iiQ Looks like our iiQ issues earlier in the week were the culprit. I created an asset view to show me student Chromebooks that met the “Asset & Owner Location Mismatch” criteria. Wrote out a rule to match that view and ran it once via a schedule. Everything moved - yippee!!

Thanks for working this out with me. My colleagues will be THRILLED.

@AMeyer Greendale Schools you did the work! Always happy to help.

Have a good afternoon!
