I’m not familiar with QZtray, but our staff are on Chromebooks, so our hope is that improvements would be friendly to this Agent deployment model.
So, being that I can’t let sleeping dogs lie. I found a label design/printing software Label LIVE that prints fantastic quality labels. Unlike Zebra’s ZDesigner that I was toying with, it unfortunately doesn’t support ODBC connections. HOWEVER, it supports printing via an “API”. So...that above code has now been morphed into a website that:
- queries the IIQ API with a serial number to get the necessary fields (owner, room, building, etc)
- selects one of the many templates I’ve created based on some logic (i.e. a cart chromebook doesn’t have an owner name, and a 1:1 chromebook doesn’t have a room number so the layout is different).
- Makes a http request to the label live API with the necessary data
- Label prints automatically (Video Below)
Here’s what the site looks like in it’s current form.

And yes, the LabelLIVE API does have an interface to generate a label preview image that you can query and download.
Back to your comment WIlliam about your staff being CrOS, since it’s a website it works on any browser based device. I have the software just running on one of our windows VMs and the website is hosted on a Linux VM I use for API integrations, would run fine on WAMP on Windows I’d presume. Currently working on fine tuning and cleaning up the code and I’ll post it here for anyone who’s interested.
We use a Brother PT-D600 label printer with .70 wide labels. I haven’t found a way to print directly from IIQ to the printer. Usually I have to export the Asset Tag/Room/Serial Number to a CSV and then import that into the Brother P-touch editor software. However, if the barcode generated is longer than other ones, I have to tweak the individual labels. Having a direct print from IIQ to the label maker would be ideal.
We use many! Dymo LabelWriter 450 turbo. Or a laserjet printer. We use Avery labels on the laser printer. Multiple sizes. Large for Carts and big pieces of equipment and small for handheld devices. Being able to choose any size Avery label would be ideal!
