Mosyle and FileWave default location

I did submit this as a ticket but thought someone here might be able to help!

You have the location assigned via the user’s location, but you do not have users assigned to those devices, correct? Are those devices moving during a sync while all your other devices (that have assigned owners) stay where they are supposed to be? 

I just want to make sure I understand before I start giving solutions. 😄

I had a similar issue with Jamf, and it looks like the setup for Mosyle/Filewave might be similar? Are the affected assets in both systems? If you look at the timeline for an asset, do you see which system is making the changes?

I’m not sure if the map by location name option can work alongside the owner’s location one. The page reads like it SHOULD work, but I can’t remember if it did when I tried it.

In Apps>Manage>Data Mappings tab, you can set a “source of truth” for users and assets. If you only want Filewave to manage locations, you can choose that on this page.

We do not have user assigned to those devices that is correct.  And yes they are moving during a sync overnight with Mosyle and or FileWave.  Devices that have assigned users are staying where they should be to the users location. 

@AMeyer Greendale Schools great suggestion AMeyer! Based on what I see, Angie, your assets are moving based on the ‘Map by Owner’s Location’ setting that you have on your apps in the Location Mappings tab. This setting would move unassigned assets to your default location.

If you all map locations in Mosyle and Filewave, you could use the ‘Map By Location Name’ and have the sync use this logic instead, but I’m not sure if any issues would pop up when utilizing both settings.

Should the custom location mappings (Owner location or Location Name) work together? Or do we need to pick one for locations to be accurate?

The problem is the map by locations won’t work in Mosyle as we do not have locations setup in Mosyle.  We are syncing Macs and iOS from Mosyle and then FileWave pulls in the windows devices.

I think the Owner location will take precedence, but I’m following up on this functionality to confirm

The assets are not assigned to a user and we don’t want them assigned to a user.  We need computer lab computers assigned to a location and prefer not to use a room as that does not help when we need to find devices by a school as our room numbers are the same across many schools. 

@angiejaeger Following up on this. If you have the location assigned by the owner’s location, but there is no owner, it will be in limbo. I would suggest creating a user called “computer lab” and assigning that location to that fake user. 

So if I create a user called Computer lab, I would need to do that for all of the locations I wanted to check devices out to then wouldn’t I?  We have 60 + locations and I did not want to create 1 generic user for each location for any items that would not be assigned to a specific user if I did not have to.  Is that the only way to get around this?  

@angiejaeger Yes, as your set up right now, I believe that would be your best option. 

@angiejaeger You can do a bulk update, which might help a little. I imported a spreadsheet of generic accounts I wanted to use, then did an asset import for anything that needed to be assigned.

Just following up on this question and I think the best solution would be one or the other. Owner location should take the standing precedence for if both are enabled, but you’ll want to pick one or the other just to make sure your assets are getting routed to your desired location, either by Owner or by your preset Location mappings.

​@JustinRaynor_iiQ Thanks for the follow up! I may test having both enabled once I have access to our sandbox so I can see what happens. 

Would there be a way with a rule to keep it in a location if there is not a user assigned?  I don’t want to create a bunch of fake users for all labs and devices not assigned to a person. 

​@angiejaeger You could also create a rule that each time the asset is updated to that default location to reset the location, but you would have to create one rule for each location, which would also be clunky. I think your best option is going to be to create those fake users. 

So this is still not working like it used to.  I have a ticket in but anyone with Mosyle and syncing owners from Mosyle over to IIQ want to give me some pointers?

​@Kathryn Carter Just wanted to let you know ​@angiejaeger and I were on a call today and she let me know their Mosyle sync is now working. We discussed adjusting some settings within the app to help with their location settings as well. They are going to wait for winter break to make the adjustments.
We discussed using both of these options together, the top setting with take precedence but if the device doesn’t have an owner then it will use the mapping from the second setting to set the location.
