+2The laptops we have are currently searchable by either serial number or an asset tag we provide.
However, on the bottom of the device there is a scannable field for the device serial number that does have the serial but it includes other data as well.
Example:
Serial number: xxxxxxxx
Scannable tag: yyyyyyyyyyxxxxxxxx
Is there a way to either add a custom searchable field or to do some sort of substring search for serial number?

I did some research and currently you cannot search using a separate tag. You also cannot search custom fields using the global search and global keyword search either. You could search by model or category but I do not think that is what you are wanting to do.
There is already an idea that is very similar to this suggestion, you should go vote and comment your support on it!

Or do you just want to type another tag into the search bar and hit search and search in “all assets”?
+2It looks like room number, asset tag, or serial number are the only searchable fields for looking up and/or assigning assets.
IE, if I scan in yyyyyyyyyyxxxxxxxx it would not match as the serial number is only xxxxxxxx.
I have added a custom field named “Scannable Serial” which contains the entire entry (yyyyyyyyyyxxxxxxxx) but, unless I am missing something, when I scan the barcode and get the longer number as a result, it is unable to match the custom field.
Clear as mud? :-P
