Parts and models (Feature request)

1. I’d also like to see the linked parts via a ticket view.  That way our field techs would be sure to grab the correct part when making a system repair.  We have several versions of the same model of CB and the difference between parts is sometimes very small but significant.

Interesting timing on this post from my seat, as we’ve been discussing this exact topic with parts a lot lately.

What you’re describing sounds like a BOM (bill of materials). Prior to being in a school district I worked for a company that serviced a lot of electronics (mainly computers). In that environment, the BOM was our saving grace.

You tend to see several models that share some parts, mainly display panels these days but in the past when laptops actually had serviceable CPU’s, optical drives and RAM you’d have a lot of crossover. Most parts have more than one actual part number - the PN from the manufacturer of the actual part, and the P/N from the manufacturer of the device it works with.

For example (fake scenario): LG makes a display with P/N 123456, that display works with an HP Chromebook and their P/N is ABC123, but it also works with a Lenovo Chromebook and their P/N for it is 654CBA and so on…

For a non-warranty repair, when looking at the BOM for the Lenovo we would potentially see all three of those part numbers as options, in the event that they were inventoried separately we may have low stock on one but plenty of another. It kept us from having repairs delayed due to the interchangeability.

In addition, you could also just look up a P/N to find all of it’s alternatives as well as all of the models it worked with.

I could really see this being beneficial in iiQ, we are a larger district so having this sort of thing available to our techs would be a game changer.
