Is there a difference between editing an asset and clicking “Unassign” under owner versus going to “Assets” → “Check In / Out”?

@MLocke 773d4ae eacs Thank you for submitting your question to our community! 😄

You can check in a device without unassigning it from the owner. Many schools do this if they let their students keep the same chromebooks year after year. Other schools make sure to hit the unassign toggle so the device is no longer checked out by the student.

When you click on an asset and unassign it, it will just simply unassign the asset from that user.

I hope this helps!

How do you check the device in without unassigning it?  To test this I opened check in/out.  I assigned a chromebook to a student.  In Assets Explorer the device is now assigned to the student.  I then checked the device back in and it has been unassigned.  Thank you.  It would be helpful in the fall not to have to reassign all of our chromebooks at the middle school.  If we could just have a check in option to move the location or something but not assign it from the student if they will receive the same device the following school year.

@STPittsinger This is already an option! 😄 Using Batch Check In, you can ensure the toggle is off so the devices will stay assigned to that user.

I hope this helps!

Hello our school district is new to iiQ. When we have a staff member needing equipment i.e. Chromebook swapped out, I “Unassing it” from the teacher, then assign the new device to them. Is there a way once I unassign, it updates the location to our warehouse without me having to do this extra step? Any other tips/advice much appreciated.

@SSaldana 85758c3 safford Thank you for submitting your question to our community! 😄  You can toggle the storage tracker and update the location. Additionally, you could create a rule for when a device is checked in, you update the location of the device.
